Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm

KI, Karolinska Institutet, Christopher R. Cederroth, PhD - PI; Barbara Canlon, PhD - researcher; Natalia Trpchevska, MD - PhD student; Niklas Edvall, MSc. - Audiologist.

The group is currently composed of 3 PhD students and an audiologist and is called Translational Auditory Neuroscience and is a subdivision of the Laboratory of Experimental Audiology led by Prof. Barbara Canlon at the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, Karolinska Institutet. The group focuses on the elucidation of the molecular mechanisms regulating tinnitus in animals and humans, with the perspective of developing new drugs against tinnitus. The laboratory of Experimental Audiology has long standing expertise in the gender consideration in auditory research, in experimental models and clinical studies with articles published in Nature Materials, Nature Medicine, Journal of Clinical Investigations, PNAS, and Current Biology. Due to the limited data available in clinics, the PI created the Swedish Tinnitus Outreach Project, one of the world’s largest cohort of characterized tinnitus and non-tinnitus subjects that will serve as a unique resource in this project. The PI who has now 4 years of experience in the tinnitus field, will coordinate the project. Prof. Canlon will provide expertise in study design. Niklas Edvall is a licensed audiologist and PhD student in the lab, collecting and analyzing audiological data from STOP. Natalia Trpchevska is an MD geneticist from Bulgaria, currently a PhD student in the lab, who will contribute with the analysis of the Whole Exome Sequencing data in collaboration with Prof. Lopez-Escamez, co-applicant. Dr. Cederroth will contribute with cross-sectional and longitudinal data (34’211 tinnitus cases and 142’229 controls) for epidemiological studies (IRFMN), provide DNA for Whole Exome Sequencing (GENYO), and blood for biomarkers using proximity extension assay (BE), a highly sensitive multiplex assay designed in Sweden and available at the SciLifeLabs at the Karolinska Institutet. The laboratory will provide expertise in audiology and tinnitus.
